We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to you as you embark on an exciting journey through the extraordinary legacy of Ulysses S. Grant, a figure whose impact on military strategy and political leadership continues to shape American history. We go thoroughly into the complexity of Ulysses S. Grant's legacy in the course we give called "Exploring the Legacy of Ulysses S. Grant." We examine his accomplishments from a range of historical angles to provide students a comprehensive understanding of his continued importance. Ulysses Simpson Grant, one of the most revered and esteemed military leaders in American history, had no interest in joining the military. Despite this, he rose to become a general and led the country for two periods. The 27th of April, 1822, saw the birth of Ulysses S. Grant at Point Pleasant, Ohio. He later stated, "A military life had no charms for me, and I had not the faintest idea of staying in the army even if I should be graduated, which I did not." Grant did, however, get his degree from the American Military Academy at West Point in 1843, and he later started commanding troops in combat. Grant, a quiet, modest, and sharply educated man, found himself unexpectedly on the front lines of the Mexican War (1846–48), a struggle he sincerely opposed but bravely fought. (During the Mexican War, the United States attacked its southern neighbor for claimed Texan territory.) He went home after the war to marry Julia Dent, his lifelong girlfriend, but they were only married for four years before Grant was moved. Grant's love for his family and dissatisfaction with army life were not lessened even by a promotion. In 1854, the 32-year-old captain gave his commission in resigning. Grant rejoined the army in 1861 after many unsuccessful business pursuits. He was given command of 20,000 Union soldiers just months after being elevated to brigadier general, and he guided them to several triumphs throughout the Civil War. As the war dragged on, Grant oversaw ever-larger forces until, as general-in-chief, he was in charge of the whole American army by 1864. Grant veered into politics in the same way that he had veered into the military. The 1868 and 1872 presidential elections were comfortably won by him. The combat veteran, who had been given a cancer diagnosis in 1884, nonetheless managed to compose one of the best military memoirs ever. Mark Twain, a close friend, published it.
